R. Shanmugathai, is 36 years old from Subramaniapuram, Kovilpatti district. She is one of the active members of Punnagai self-help group. Her husband is doing centring work. She has 2 children. Son is studying in grade 11 and daughter is studying in grade 6.

Meaningful Utilisation :
Mrs Shanmugathai availed the loan amount of Rs.10, 000 from SPS ME project and she has started the chicken stall. She has bought the required items like knife, cutting board and invested in the business. Recently she has availed the loan amount of Rs.15,000 from WoMEn 1000+ project to extend her business.

Never settle for less than you deserve:

Mrs Shanmugathai opens her chicken stall mostly on Sundays. She opens the stall in the early morning and works till evening. She is managing the stall on her own. She opens the stall on weekdays only when she gets special requests from the customers for bulk orders. She also knows tailoring and she does it on the weekdays. She never gets settled with what she knows. She shows very much interest to learn new things and that made her attend Oyster mushroom cultivation training in the month of Jan 2017.

Real Success:

Mrs Shanmugathai is a self-motivated person and earns a profit of Rs.1000 per week from the chicken stall and earns Rs.200 a day from tailoring. She feels glad that she is able to support her children’s education.

veeralakshmi

Veeralakshmi (28) from Muthalipatti village, Tuticorin district is one of the beneficiaries of WoMEn 1000+ project. Her husband is working as a temporary staff in Dasildar office and son is studying in grade 2.

Nine-tenths of education is an encouragement:

Veeralakshmi has got married while she was in schooling so she had to discontinue her studies but her husband Muthaiyan encouraged her to continue the education and made her complete the diploma in teacher’s education and recently completed graduation in English. She feels proud to share that she is the 1st female graduate in her village.

Active Leader:

She has been an active leader of Sembaruthi SHG (self-help group). She emphasizes the importance of education of girl child to the team members. She is one of the beneficiaries of WoMEn 1000+ project. She has availed the loan amount Rs. 15,000 and used it for farming and bought a small goat.

Ideal Example:

Veeralakshmi also knows tailoring and earns partial income by getting orders from the neighbours. She speaks very confidently and plays an important role in her village where women get motivated to send their children regularly to school. She feels happy to say that her self-help group team consists of 11 members and the savings are increased up to Rs.210 / – per month.

Mrs Mohana is 31 years old from Basin Bridge Project Site. She belongs to Sagaya Annai SHG and one of the beneficiaries of WoMEn 1000+ Project.Her husband is working as a driver. She has 3 children and she wanted to support her husband financially as his income was not sufficient to run the family.

So she has started selling the mineral water cans to the people in the nearby locality but not able to extend the business to the next level. So she has approached DBSSS, Basin Bridge for the loan and availed Rs. 15, 000 as loan amount in the month of Oct 2016. With the loan amount, she has bought 100 new empty cans which cost Rs.140 per can.

The purification of water is getting done in Red hills where Rs.8 to be paid for refilling the water per can which has 20 litres capacity. The cost per can is Rs. 30 and she sells approximately 50 cans per day. So after deducting the diesel and transportation cost, she earns Rs.200 a day.

Mrs Rajalakshmi is 30 years old from Subrajalakshmiramaniyapuram, Kovilpatti Taluk of Tuticorin district. She belongs to Punnagai self-help group. She is one of the beneficiaries of WoMEn 1000+ project. Her husband is working as a daily labourer and her son is studying grade 6. As the family income was not stable, she wanted to support her husband financially by doing some business.

She has approached various money lenders for the investment to start the business but the interest rates were high and finally, she came to know about Vembu Trust and proposed that she is going to start small grocery cum vegetable shop and availed Rs.10, 000 loan amount in the month of October 2016 as Deewali bonanza.

She runs the shop with the help of her husband and earns Rs.150 to Rs.200 a day by selling goods in the shop. She feels glad and proud that she is supporting her husband financially.

M. Seethalakshmi, is 41 years old from Mooppanpatti, Kovilpatti district. She belongs to Thamaraseethalakshmii Pookkal self-help group.Her husband is a daily labourer. She has 2 children. Her daughter is doing grade 9 and son is studying in grade 8.

She is one of the beneficiaries of WoMEn 1000+ project. People in her village do farming and cattle rearing. She was working as a daily labourer in fields. The income which she was earning was not sufficient.

Timely help from WoMEn 1000+:

She has decided to do cow rearing but she had to pay Rs.25, 000 / to buy a cow with its calf. She was able to manage Rs.15, 000 from outside as a debt and she has approached VEMBU Trust for the loan amount of Rs.10, 000. She feels happy to say that it was a timely help and so thankful for the loan amount received from WoMEn 1000+.

Enjoying the fruits of success:

Seethalakshmi enjoys her work and she sells 6 litres of milk every day. Approximately she earns Rs.6, 000 per month. She is glad to share with us that her contribution to her home has increased and she has started saving the amount. She is so confident that she will make the children complete their higher education.

 raniMrs Rani is 53 years old from Basin Bridge project site. She belongs to Sagaya  Annai self-help group and one of the beneficiaries of WoMEn 1000+ project. Since her husband passed away, she was in a situation to take up the responsibility to care for her children.

So she has decided to start small tiffin centre in front of her house. She has a  daughter, who is grade 10 drop out and helping her mother in tiffin centre doing household work and son is studying grade 5 in a government school.

Though she is been doing the business for the past 5 years, it was not much success because she was borrowing money from the local money lenders with the higher rate of interest to meet her daily expenses. She has approached basin bridge office and applied to avail loan from the WoMEn 1000+ Project.

She has received the loan amount of Rs.15, 000. She is able to invest more in business now to buy things required like rice, dal, fuel, utensils etc., She earns approximately Rs.150 per day after deducting her expenses towards business.
She feels happy to share that, she has started saving her income. She is so confident that this would help her son to complete his higher education and will bring change in her life.

Maharasi is 29 years old, a young mother of two children from Subramaniyapuram villagemageswari of Kovilpatti district.Her husband is a daily labourer and doesn’t have a continuous job. To meet the daily expenses she would borrow money from money lenders for high interest.

After joining an SHG run by VEMBU trust, she has become an active leader of Maruthani SHG and gained confidence in herself and learnt how to be self-reliant. She has received the loan amount of Rs.20,000 from Vembu supported by SPS Netherlands and invested on the meat shop and also selling Idly batter to make an additional income. Thus she earns around Rs.7,000 per month.

Now with the income, she is making, she is able to support her family financially and also her children’s education without much difficulty. She has grown into a successful role model for the rest of the group members and also in the locality.
